by Diane Duane
This is the first book in one of the classic series of children’s fantasy and science fiction. Nita Callahan is browsing in the library when she finds a book called So You Want to Be a Wizard. When she checks the book out, she discovers that it is actually a manual for how to practice wizardry. The magic in these books is different than that in most other fantasy: casting a spell requires complicated mathematical diagrams, and takes energy from the person who casts it. The whole purpose of being a wizard is to fight the disorder and chaos in the universe. Nita meets another new wizard, Kit, and together they must work to stop the Lone One, their greatest enemy, who can never be truly defeated.
