Gerald the elephant and Piggie have recently starred in the MPL story club puppet production of “I Am Invited to a Party“ with Miss Laura and Miss Molly. The Gerald and Piggie series by Mo Willems are real crowd pleasers as read-aloud lapsits or beginning readers. There are several adventures in the series, and the newest one “Elephants Cannot Dance” is on order. Easy readers have come a long way from the mundane Dick and Jane books I remember. Willems’ wry sense of humor and hilarious illustrations are fun for adults too. You may know Willems Pigeon or Knufflebunny picture books. Willems has also written “You Can Never Find a Rickshaw When It Rains,” a collection of cartoons illustrating his global adventures after college.
