Calpurnia Tate is the only girl in a family with six boys. In 1899, girls are expected to grow up, marry, and raise families. Calpurnia had never thought too much about it until she starts spending time with her grandfather. He’s an avid naturalist, and he gives Calpurnia a glimpse at a different way of life. While Calpurnia’s grandfather is busy teaching her about the scientific method, her mother is trying to teach her how to make socks- which Calpurnia finds incredibly boring. Can a girl grow up to be something other than a housewife?
