This ranks with the best dog stories ever written. Puppies, Dogs, and Blue Northers is a wonderful account of Paulsen’s life in the remote Minnesota forest. Paulsen raised and raced sled dogs, often taking the dogs out for long solitary runs in the wilderness. Cookie, his lead dog, saved Paulsen’s life on many occasions. When Paulsen developed heart disease, he had to give up breeding and racing sled dogs. Cookie also “retired” to become his constant companion. Sled dogs show enormous loyalty, and Paulsen obviously returns this love and respect. The scene where Paulsen lets thirty puppies into the cabin to surprise his sleeping wife and son made me laugh out loud. This would be a book to read aloud as a family because it works on so many levels.
