Sharon Draper has won many awards for her fascinating novels for teens. With Sassy, she launches a new series geared toward a younger crowd. Sassy is a feisty 4th grader who is tired of everyone in her family referring to her as “Little Sister.” She is small for her age which makes her feel invisible sometimes, but she is ready to show her family, classmates and the world that there is a lot more to Sassy than what meets the eye. She has creative ideas for adding spunk and “sass” to everything from fashion to school lunches. When Sassy’s courage is put to the test at the end of the book, she comes out a real-life hero. This book is perfect for 3rd-4th grade girls who can identify with Sassy’s need to show her true colors and be noticed.
