Kenny’s family in Flint, Michigan is known as the Weird Watson’s for many reasons. His younger sister Joetta is overdressed in the winter because it’s believed southern folks will freeze solid. Keeny, the narrator, does well in school and wants to please his parents. The older brother Byron, is somewhat of a trouble maker and their parents decide that he needs the guidance of their southern grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama. The Watson family packs up and heads down to Birmingham in their brown bomber. Since this book is set during the Civil Rights movement, the Watson’s face many trials of racism as they make their way to the south. This book is a historical fiction set during the church bombings in Birmingham. This book will have you laughing, a little teary eyed, and falling in love with the Weird Watson’s. This was a favorite of mine in the 5th grade and again in my college Children’s Literature course. It’s a must read in my mind.
