I may have been hypnotized into reading this book by it’s sparkling, spiraling cover – or maybe it was because I love pugs! Anyway, it was an entertaining read about an orphan named Molly Moon who has lived all her life in a horrible orphanage in England until she discovers her way out – from a rare book she found at the library about hypnotism.

Molly has natural talent, and after practicing on the headmistress’ pug, Petula, she learns how to hypnotize large groups of people with her large green eyes and soothing voice. She manipulates her way to New York City with Petula to find her best friend Rocky who was adopted by an American family. Molly becomes an instant star in a musical even though she has no dancing, acting, or singing talents, lives in the penthouse of the most expensive hotel in the city, and has everything she could ever want. Little does she know there’s a horrible villain on her trail ready to uncover her scheme of lies and deception, and use her talents for an evil plan of his own.

This is the first book in the Molly Moon Series and would be a good recommendation for kids who like Lemony Snicket or the Mysterious Benedict Society.
