    by Nathaniel Philbrick

Philbrick tells the true story of how a huge sperm whale rammed into the Whaleship Essex in 1820. Herman Melville was inspired by the sinking of the Essex in writing his classic epic novel, Moby Dick. Philbrick researched true accounts of the handful of sailors who survived this horrific event. They were stranded in leaky boats with little or no food or water for 3 months. I read this book several years ago, but some of the shocking details have stuck with me. Fans of the TV shows Survivor Man or Man vs. Wild will be riveted by Revenge of the Whale. Older readers and adults might want to try Philbrick’s longer adult version of this tale, In the Heart of the Sea.
