This is a fun rhyming story from Australia, a Chicken Little adaptation, which builds up to a stampede of animals running away from a terrible noise…a “terrible PLOP!” We know what the noise is all along, but it’s fun to see how out of hand things get, and how it all resolves. Only the big, mean bear questions what this “terrible PLOP” is, and threatens the tiniest rabbit to show him. The bear in turn gets spooked, but the little rabbit’s courage pays off…he learns that this “PLOP” wasn’t anything scary after all — AND he can have his chocolate cake too!

I was drawn to the bold design and lively illustrations of this book, which remind me of 50’s cartoons like Yogi Bear. I also liked that the rabbits sit and munch on carrots AND chocolate cake (rabbits really do have a “sweet tooth”.)
