This book won the 2010 Newbery Medal for best children’s book of the year. As Miranda begins 6th grade, her life suddenly starts to change. She unexpectedly loses the friendship of her best friend, Sal, but finds new friends in her classmates Collin and Annemarie. She is intrigued by the troubled boy, Marcus, who hits Sal for no reason. While she helps her mother practice to go on a TV game show in hopes of winning some money to turn their situation around, she strengthens her relationship with her mother’s boyfriend, Richard. She has strange encounters with the crazy “Laughing Man” on her street corner and the grumpy deli owner, Jimmy.
But most mysterious of all, Miranda begins finding notes hidden in her belongings that predict the future. Someone knows what is going to happen to her before it happens, and that someone is trying to save a life. But whose? and why? The only thing that doesn’t seem to change in Miranda’s world is her favorite book, A Wrinkle in Time, which she reads over and over until the pages are worn and crumbling. Miranda is a thoughtful, smart character who finally unravels the big mystery.
It is rare to find a book that so cleverly weaves science fiction, mystery, romance and history into one incredible story.
