This new book caught my eye as soon as it arrived in the children’s room. Maria finds an orphaned wolf pup near death on her way home. Maria’s grandfather tries to discourage her from rescuing the pup, but she does anyway. Maria and Grandfather raise the pup Shadow to maturity, and the wolf becomes a part of the village. Until the day a storyteller arrives in the village. The mysterious woman captivates her listeners, including Shadow. Maria must cope with losing her friend back to the wild. I really liked the mystical connection between Shadow and Maria. Recommended for children and grownups who know the power of trust between animal and human.
