West makes her debut with The Shadows, the first in the series The Books of Elsewhere. Our heroine is eleven-year-old Olive, a bright girl, but still a misfit with her scholarly parents. Her family has moved into a rundown mansion, which they purchased with its contents. Olive is left to entertain herself, so she sets out to explore the house. She’s especially intrigued by the eerie paintings in every room. Olive finds a pair of antique glasses which allow her to actually enter and explore the paintings. The story is creepy, but has some light moments when three cats appear to give Olive warnings about the evil that still lives in the mansion.
Kids that liked Coraline will enjoy this new series (grown-ups too). Grades 4-6, ages 9-11.
