    Harper Lee was named after her momma’s favorite writer, so it’s fitting that she spends so much of her time expressing herself in poetry. In this novel, by Ann Haywood Leal, Harper shares her heartwarming tale of loss, love and survival one carefully chosen word at a time.

    Harper Lee, her younger brother Hemingway and their mother are evicted from the only home they know. They move into a small motel room and Harper’s mother is forced to work more hours. This leaves Harper in charge of watching her brother during the day, which means she can’t go to school (the one place Harper feels right). This also means Harper won’t be able to turn in her poems for a chance to read them aloud to the school. Desperate to make things right at home, find a way back to school and determined to get her poems turned in, Harper turns to the one thing she knows…writing.
