Jemima (Jem) Mallard lives in a future where humans’ lack of environmental care has caused much of the world to flood, leaving London is covered in water. Readers are thrown into the story with Jem’s houseboat suspiciously sinking, while her father, Police Chief Mallard, seems to have too many other things on his mind to worry about it. Jem “borrows” a jetski from the annoying YPD (Youth Police Department) boy who is trying to haul her in for breaking other rules. In the process, both of them end up in an underwater community of people who are revolting against the laws above. The text is poorly edited with lots of typos, but the story is fun and full of adventure. The enticing illustrations by Paul McGrory give the book a graphic novel feel. I hope to read the sequel when it comes out. Fans of the City of Ember books might like this interesting storyline.

I’m very excited to read the sequel, Father Thames, which is only out in the UK right now but I’ve ordered the library’s copy from amazon. :)
