This became one of my very favorite bedtime books the first time I read it, and it’s only grown on me as I read it again. Bear is very set in his solitary ways, and he isn’t expecting overnight company to appear at his front door. But Bear grudgingly invites mischievous Mouse in for a game of checkers and cocoa. Bear isn’t at all happy about disrupting his quiet bedtime routine though. Little Mouse tries hard to be the perfect silent guest, though he can’t help teasing Bear a little. I love the details in the soft watercolor illustrations, and there are details that will make grownups smile too. The large and tiny print also make the pages fun to linger over. There’s a message about friendship being well worth changing your ways a little–but it’s not heavy-handed. If you’re looking for a new book about bedtime or about the value of good company, read A Bedtime For Bear.
