Written by Susan Hughes Illustrated by Willow Dawson
Spanning history from Ancient Egypt to the American Civil War, this collection of short nonfiction stories present a brief glimpse into the lives of seven young women who choose to dress and behave like men in order to gain the freedom denied them because of their gender. In only a few pages per story, Hughes tells the basic facts of each woman’s life while also demonstrating the great disparity in the way women and men were treated. Dawson’s clean lines and stylize illustrations provide a glimpse into the emotion behind each woman’s decision. Together the words and illustrations present a compelling narrative that will make readers feel lucky to live in a time of greater equality.
