Cloaked In Red is a playful collection of eight Little Red Riding Hood tales. But the star of these stories isn’t always Little Red, and the Wolf isn’t always bad! Each tale spins off a traditional character in a new direction. Kids and grown-ups alike will enjoy these “fractured fairy tales” with a contemporary feel. My favorite story was “Granny and the Wolf,” which gives the elderly grandmother a lot more spunk than her traditional role as a helpless victim. Indeed, Granny doesn’t need to be rescued from the wolf by the woodcutter at all. Granny decides that the wolf is a better friend than the woodcutter who wants to marry her for her money. Another story stars the cloak itself in an adventure with a surprise ending. Cloaked In Red would be an excellent choice for a family read-aloud.
