Nailer’s life is hard, but everyone’s lives are hard these days. Since the oil fields have been drained and the rising seas have flooded coastal cities, the only people with any money are the Swanks, and they have more than they need. Nailer works collecting scrap metal as a ship breaker and spends the rest of his time trying to gauge his father’s moods. But all that changes the day he and Pima discover a wrecked hydrofoil ship and a young Swank girl in desperate need of help. Now Nailer has a chance to get out of the ship-breaking yards forever, but only if he’s willing to leave everything behind. Not just his abusive father, but also Pima and her mother Sadna, the only true family he’s ever known.

Bacigalupi’s fast paced plot and multifaceted characters will appeal to fans of The Hunger Games and The Uglies.
