The Familiars by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson

Aldwyn is not your ordinary cat. He is an orphaned, street savvy, quick thinking feline only concerned with the when, what and where of his next meal. That is until young Jack, a student of wizardry, ends up choosing Aldwyn as his “familiar” (magical animal companion to wizards) by a series of strange events. The problem isn’t that Jack takes Aldwyn away from the city to live in Stone Runlet where he practices magic nor that this is also home to brainiac Skylar and slow-witted Gilbert, the bluejay and tree frog familiars of the other young wizards. The biggest problem is that Aldwyn is not a familiar and has no magical powers. But before he can explain to the others that he is just an ordinary street cat, Jack and the other students are kidnapped and it’s up to their three familiars to rescue them. Does Aldwyn have what it take to save the children with no magical ability and without revealing his secret? This book will take readers on a magical journey filled with fantasy, magic and, of course, adventure.

A movie adaptation of this book is currently in the works and the second in the series, The Familiars: Secrets of the Crown is due to be released this fall.
