Can We Save the Tiger? is a perfect introduction to the subject of endangered species and conservation. British conservationist Martin Jenkins has teamed up with illustrator Vicky White to create another gorgeous picture-book format nature book. A variety of species, from tigers to tiny partula snails, are presented. Jenkins explores their history, why they are threatened and what could save them. There’s also a fact sheet for each featured species. Other species, now extinct or threatened are also included. Jenkins doesn’t preach, but he makes clear that saving these species will take a lot of hard work and change. He sets out the primary threats to most species as human encroachment, the introduction of non-native predators, and disease.
Vicky White travels the world to paint wild animals, and her technique is beautiful. She shows her artistic process by developing the subject from sketch to detailed drawing with touches of oil paint. Together, Jenkins and White have produced a sensitive introduction to these species.
