Evie is having trouble adjusting to her parents’ divorce, especially now that her father’s new wife is pregnant with twins. Evie misses the time she and her father used to spend cooking together, and she misses her (now her father’s) dog. Evie hopes that her summer cooking class can fill the void she’s feeling as well as make her an excellent cook.

While Evie has to deal with a number of difficult situations in the novel, Jackson maintains an optimistic tone throughout. Evie and her friends and family are well-realized and appealing characters. Even when Evie feels overwhelmed, her family and friends come through for her. Recipes relating to each chapter are included.
