In her home town of Wellow, Verity has never fit in. Unlike her charming younger sister, Poppy, Verity is quiet and a bit clumsy. She has only recently made her first friend, another misfit named Henry. Still, her home has always been a refuge. However, when a grandmother she’s never heard of shows up unannounced, home life becomes anything but an escape. Verity discovers that not only is her family more influential than she ever suspected, but she has an important role to play in protecting herself and everyone she cares about. Now, Verity must discover her hidden strengths, reach out to new friends, and learn what everyone else in Wellow seems to already know, in order to defeat an adversary older than anyone can imagine.
At first glance, Verity’s world seems normal, but as the story progresses, the mystery and magic of the Gentry and their role in Wellow’s history create a fantasy world readers will hate to leave. Welsh’s tale of sailing, storms, and “true stories,” will delight fans of Susan Cooper’s The Dark Is Rising series. This title looks to be the first in a Verity Gallant series.
