This graphic novel in our Young Adult section is a fantastic read, especially for spooky October. Anya is frustrated by her family members who don’t understand her, and at high school where she isn’t beautiful or popular. Within the first dozen pages, Anya accidentally falls into an abandoned well and is stuck for two days. A skeleton at the bottom of the well is a bit creepy, but not near as creepy as the lonely ghost who rests atop it. The ghost of Emily Reilly. When the ghost follows her back home, it seems that befriending a ghoul might have some real perks. But there’s more to Emily Reilly than first meets the eye. Brosgol is a skillful artist who perfectly captures the emotions of Anya in her ups and downs as a typical teen girl who happens to have a ghost as a best friend. I hope there will be more Anya books to come.
