This fast-paced adventure covers a lot of ground, introducing Dessa and her odd friends as well as the evil queen, her equally evil chamberlain, and the captain of her guard. Dessa is an acrobat with a traveling circus, but readers soon learn that Dessa’s fellow performers are more interested in picking pockets than entertaining. Dessa disdains the stealing, but it is forced upon her when she ruins the take by interrupting her act to chase down a man she remembers from a tragic flashback. And thus, she joins with Topper, the circus juggler, and Fisk, the strongman, in an attempt to rob the queen’s treasury.

Chantler’s illustrations capture not only the expressions, but also the personalities of Dessa and her friends. Dessa is a spunky heroine with incredible acrobatic skill, but it will take all of her cunning along with the help of her friends to end this night alive. With quirky characters and a multi-layered plot, this first graphic novel in the Three Thieves series will have readers begging for the second book.
