Annie loves to run – always barefoot, usually with her best friend Max. Running helps her feel steady during a time in her life when so many things are changing. Her mother is pregnant, which is a big change of course, but for Annie, it is a welcome one. The other major change is not welcome; her grandfather is showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Max is moody and grumpy lately, so he isn’t much help. But Annie has running to help her clear her mind. The track coach at Annie’s school is pressuring her to join the team, but Annie doesn’t want to race. For her, the only reason to run is the pure pleasure of it.
