    >Nurk: The Strange, Surprising Adventures Of A (Somewhat) Brave Shrew

    by Ursula Vernon

Ursula Vernon has a wonderful talent for creating whimsical creatures, in her artwork and stories. You may know Vernon from her Dragonbreath graphic novel series. Nurk is her first novel, and I hope she writes more about this unlikely little hero.

Nurk is a meek shrew, who lives safely beneath the willow tree by the stream. He’s not certain he’s up to having adventures like his intrepid grandmother.  Still, Nurk would like to see a little bit of the world outside the willow.  His chance comes when a splotchy letter addressed to his grandmother is delivered to him by mistake.  It’s a desperate plea for help! Nurk doesn’t know where his grandmother is, so he thinks he should return the letter. But to whom? And where? There are lots of colorful allies and enemies along the way, and it will take all of Nurk’s courage and resources to fulfill his quest.
Recommended for younger readers who enjoy animal fantasy stories or as a family read aloud. Reviewed by Victoria.
