Princess Celie loves her Castle Glower. Every Tuesday it changes a little, adding a room here or a secret passageway there. It’s impossible for everyone to keep up with the tricky Castle, but Celie explores each new addition and creates maps to help her family and the servants get around. Early in the story, though, a dark mystery creeps into Celie’s life. Her parents, King and Queen of Sleyne, and Celie’s oldest brother, Prince Bran, are attacked while traveling. Most of the kingdom seems to believe they were killed, but Celie and her older siblings, Rolf and Lilah, cannot believe this horrible news, and apparently neither can the Castle. When royalty from neighboring kingdoms arrive to mourn the deaths, Celie must get help from the Castle to find out who can be trusted and how they can find out what really happened to the rest of her family. Celie is not a damsel in distress waiting to be saved by her prince charming. She takes matters into her own hands, risking her own life to overcome those with evil intentions now lurking in Castle Glower’s halls.
Readers of Tim or Diana Wynne Jones will enjoy this lively fantasy, as will fans of Gail Carson Levine or Elizabeth Winthrop.
