Rufus desperately wants a dog, but his fussy work-at-home father won’t hear of it. Instead, his mom buys Rufus a guinea pig. What a disappointment! Rufus names the guinea pig Fido, just so his father won’t forget that Rufus really wants a dog instead. Oddly, this guinea pig acts more like a dog than a rodent. She sits on command, she fetches sticks, and she buries bones. Fido has a big presence for a small fluffy critter, causing all kinds of noise and trouble.
The characters are believeable and the dialogue is very funny. Fido is a unique character who’ll win you over just like she wins over Rufus. Guinea Dog is a nominee for the William Allen White award that will really appeal to kids 9-12. Jennings also wrote We Can’t All Be Rattlesnakes and Invasion of the Dognappers. Reviewed by Victoria
