Kevin Henkes has given us so many wonderful mice characters: Lilly (and her purple plastic purse), Owen (and his blanket), Julius (baby of the world), Wendall, Wemberly, and the unforgettable Chrystanthemum. Now we have Penny, a big sister mouse competing for attention against two adorable but needy twin babies. Will mama and papa ever have time to listen to the amazing song Penny made up all by herself? Finally, after the babies are done napping and after dinner, everyone listens to and loves Penny’s song. In fact, they all sing and dance along until the whole family is tuckered out.
This is Henkes’s first beginning reader, and it is perfect for first graders still working on their reading skills, with word repetition and helpful clues from the pictures. I am looking forward to seeing more Penny books to come.
