It is easy to see why this novel received a Printz honor. The story has it all: magic, danger, family conflict, competition, even romance. But more importantly, the characters have depth and individuality.
Puck and Sean have had difficult lives, but their difficulties have made them determined, not bitter. Each has strengths and loyalties that many of the people around them cannot understand. In the races, Puck and Sean are willing to risk everything even their lives to win, because losing may mean losing everything. It makes no sense for them to create an alliance, but as they discover respect and trust for one another their lives are changed completely. Now, although they are pitted against each other in their ultimate goal, their friendship looms ever more important for each. But, in the end, there can be only one winner of the Scorpio Races.
