If your newly independent reader hasn’t discovered Kate DiCamillo’s fantastic Mercy Watson series yet, come in to the library today and check them out! This series is sure to soon be among your favorites in our Easy Reader collection. DiCamillo has long been renowned for her award-winning chapter books, and it’s a treat that she’s also written a set of books for readers who are just starting out.
Each of the six books features an unusual main character: a pig named Mercy who loves toast with a great deal of butter on it! Each book has brief chapters and large text to tell the silly antics Mercy and the other lovable characters get into. One wonderful feature of these books is that even though they fit the structure of an “easy reader” with a tendency for shorter sentences and repetitive words, DiCamillo materfully inserts great vocabulary-builders that promise to challenge every reader.
Illustrations are brilliantly done by Chris Van Dusen (you must read his other hilarious picture books). This already well-loved series can’t be recommended highly enough.
