Fake Mustache by Tom Angleberger

Lenny’s best friend Caspar has a lot of birthday cash from his grandmother with the instruction to use it on the most unnecessary thing possible. Caspar decides to buy a nice suit and a real-hair fake mustache. But after Caspar buys them, things start to go wrong. Banks are robbed by school librarians and accordion players who have no memory of the crime. Nobody knows who is truly behind the robberies, though. Well, nobody except Lenny. The fake mustache is so convincing, so enchanting that everyone is under its spell. Only Lenny and a has-been sitcom teen actress have avoided being brainwashed by Caspar and his amazing mustache. Caspar is after more than money, though – he’s after power. How can Lenny and Jodie O’Rodeo possibly save the country from a criminal mastermind as brilliant as Caspar? Can they (and should they) save Caspar from the original owner of the mustache?
