The beauty of nature and the beauty of poetry come together in this wonderful introduction to poetry. Stunning close-up photographs of a wide array of animals adorn the pages of poetry gathered from the masters. From children’s favorites like Jack Prelutsky to timeless masters like Emily Dickinson, there is a little bit of everything in the National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry. As with any collection, you’ll get some chaff with the grain. I found several that I couldn’t quite figure out why they were chosen. You may also want to scan the poem before you read it aloud to young children - some of the animals meet an untimely demise. All in all, though, this volume is a beautiful addition to any child’s collection – whether a budding poet or young naturalist.
