How do I get a library card?
A library card allows you to borrow materials, use public computers, and access online resources. To get a card, complete a registration form and apply for a library card at the Circulation Desk.
In addition to a completed registration form you need to bring:
- Photo identification (driver’s license, passport, student I.D.)
- Proof of your current address (recently postmarked mail, checks, rent receipt, etc.)
A parent or legal guardian must sign the registration sheet for children under 18 years of age. A parent’s identification may be used for minors. A parent or legal guardian has legal responsibility for his or her child’s use of the library.
Always bring your card when you come to the library. If you don’t have your card with you, you may check out one time by supplying identification.
Your PIN is by default the last 4 digits of the telephone number you used when setting up your library card. If you have forgotten your PIN, you may recover it by going to the following website:
You may also change your PIN at anytime by logging into your account and then selecting “Change Logon” in your Patron Account.
Most library materials may be renewed at the circulation desk, by telephone or by using the library’s online catalog. Most items can be renewed twice if they are not reserved for another person. See Checkout Limits and Loan Periods to see if items may be renewed.
If you can’t find the item or information you are looking for, please ask library staff for help. If an item is checked out, you may reserve it and have the item held for you when it is returned. You may reserve items using the library’s online catalog. When the item is available you will be notified by email or mail. Adult Services staff at the Information Desk can help you reserve an item if you have questions.
If the materials you request are not available at the Manhattan Public Library, you can check out our InterLibrary Loan service. Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service offered by Manhattan Public Library (MPL) to its cardholders. If you need materials, either print or audiovisual, that MPL does not own, we will try to borrow them for you from another library. Please check out the InterLibrary Loan page for more information on how you can make a ILL self-request.
